Before jumping into Gift 4 play, Joanne and Bob practiced a bit with the cubes of Gift Three, with both players
conducting six transformations of their own choosing.
The eight one-inch square cubes were emptied onto a standard Kindergarten grid; then, systematically
moved in a series of steps to create new forms. They did this twice, moving one or two cubes at a time.
The resulting patterns were compared and given names, asking what they saw in each design.
They ended up with different-looking "stepping stones" in a creek.
They cautioned about sticking to the rule of moving one or two parts symmetrically in relation to the center and in
opposite positions. Otherwise, one could get lost in the process as well as miss out on all the patterns that develop
along the way.
The learning is in the process. In returning to the ground-form, or going back in a series of moves to
return the eight cubes into the box, the players realized the importance of moving the cubes systematically
in the process of going back, it's easy to move too quickly and not observe the beauty of the transformed patterns.
